A New York mortgage broker with a history of committing mortgage fraud, including one case pending, is now accused of killing his friend, a real estate attorney.
Ronnie Thornton, 38, has faced three lawsuits on Long Island related to mortgage schemes. One suit is pending, one was settled and another ended in a judgment against him.
In the pending case, Thornton is being sued by a man that says he worked with the mortgage broker at Syosset-based East Coast Capital Corp. to refinance his home. Thornton allegedly stole almost $40,000 in monies that were supposed to be used to pay off the borrower’s debts. The suit alleges Thornton took the money.
He was also found guilty of refinancing a home he owned with his estranged wife against court order, and another case was settled in which he allegedly stole the identity of another man to apply for a mortgage loan.
Thornton is now being charged, along with three others, in the fatal shooting of a childhood friend and real estate attorney, James DiMartino. Prosecutors believe the motive was financially-driven.
