Attorney Proclaims Innocence
|
| |
March 27, 2009
A real estate attorney on trial for mortgage fraud-related charges says she was taken advantage of; that she was just an innocent pawn in a scheme ran by greedy men. The prosecutors, however, are giving the jury a different story.
Victoria Sprouse's lawer said she failed to realize she was in the middle of a multimillion-dollar mortgage fraud scheme. But the assistant U.S. Attorney said she increased her fees from $1,800 a day to $10,000 plus, including one day's take of $26,000 in fees. A witness testified that her name was forged on paperwork for 24 homes that closed on the same day. Sprouse allegedly handled those closings.
Sprouse's attorney said she was duped by convincing fraudsters to participate. Five others have pleaded guilty in this case.
