$39 Million in Mortgage Fraud Leads to 8 Indictments
June 4 -- Eight people have been indicted in a $39 million mortgage fraud scheme, according to U.S. Attorney Wifredo A. Ferrer.
The federal indictment alleges the group fraudulently obtained inflated mortgages for the purchase of condo units at Marina Oaks Condominiums in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The indictment names Osbelia Lazardi, 54, of Southwest Ranches, Dayanara Montero, 37, of Miramar, Edward R. Mena, 36, of Miami, David Arboleda, 27, of Doral, Quelyory Rigal, 36, of Homestead, Celeste Mota, 29, of Fort Myers, Juan Carlos Sanchez, 39, of New York, and Sandra P. Campo, 34, of Colombia, South America. All have made court appearances except Campo who remains at large, prosecutors said.

June 4 -- A former employee of a Bedford County, Va., company pleaded guilty Thursday in federal court in Lynchburg to a tax charge that stems from a mortgage fraud scheme.

June 4 -- An Ohio man who promised buyers in 2005 "there's money to be had" has been charged in connection with a $36 million mortgage fraud scheme involving property in the WatersEdge development near Allanton.
