May 18, 2009
A Maryland man who pleaded guilty to participating in a $4 million mortgage fraud scheme was sentenced to prison even though his lawyers said he is dependent on his family for his care. The 52-year-old was nearly stabbed to death last September.
Wayne A. Lee was reportedly stabbed repeatedly by two men who were hired by him to do odd jobs around his house. Lee's neck was cut, his face slashed and his shoulder was cut several times causing nerve damage and an eight-week stay in the hospital.
Lee's attorney said he needs round-the-clock care and would not receive it in prison. Although the maximum sentence Lee faced was 30 years, he was sentenced to two years, nine months.
