The trial for a business associate of former Evergreen Corp. President David B. Willan was cut short after he pleaded guilty to charges relating to a massive mortgage fraud scheme soon after the court session began.
Gene Luce III, a former mortgage broker for Carnation Banc from Ohio, had worked with Willan on several transactions that were allegedly fraudulent. Luce was sentenced to two years in prison, but on the prosecution's recommendation his sentence was suspended. He was placed on probation for three years and the court agreed to expunge his record if he completed all the terms of his probation.
Luce also has to pay $5,000 restitution towards a fund for all the victims in the scam. Luce, Willan and 15 others were named in 147-count indictment. Willan's trial begins in May.
