The impact of mortgage fraud has long-term lasting effects, according to a university assistant professor whose research is to be published later this year.
Andy Carswell, University of Georgia's assistant professor of housing and consumer economics and mortgage finance expert, disputes critic claims that mortgage fraud has little long-term lasting effects. Carswell's research concluded that mortgage fraud artificially inflates home values and property taxes in the community around the purchase.
The artificially elevated values linger for years after the fraud and foreclosure, the research contends, creating a false price appreciation.
