Fraudsters Plead Guilty to Avoid Maximum Penalties
|
| |
May 5, 2009
Pleading guilty in lieu of a jury trial might be one of the smartest decisions a fraudster can make. Public outrage over the billions in mortgage fraud makes it nearly impossible to find a completely unbiased jury of their peers.
Cases such as Metropolitan Money Store's president Joy Jackson and her husband, Kurt Fordham, who used proceeds from fraud to pay for a lavish wedding have spawned numerous articles in the media, enough publicity that may have persuaded the couple to plead guilty and avoid a trial.
Other fraudsters have followed in the couple's footsteps to avoid hefty sentences and plea bargained their way instead of choosing to go to trial. Paper trails are often concrete evidence, leaving the jury with a clear picture of what really happened.
