Fraud Victim Might Lose House to FDIC
|

March 10, 2009
A woman who was allegedly scammed in a foreclosure rescue scheme could be held responsible for a fraudulent mortgage now held by the Federal Deposit Insurance Company.
Waver Brickhouse's attorneys are in talks with the FDIC now that the company holds a mortgage on her property that was originated with IndyMac Federal Bank. Brickhouse said she was in danger of defaulting in 1996 when a company called Home Savers Corporation promised to help her. Instead, they secretly sold her home through IndyMac and stripped the equity.
Her $231,000 mortgage has now ballooned into $380,000 with payments the retired woman said she just cannot afford. In addition, she said she refuses to pay a mortgage that was fraudulently obtained.
FDIC officials state that they do not want to put Brickhouse out on the street but are trying to work out an affordable payment plan if she would only release her financial information. Brickhouse's lawyers contend the FDIC cannot hold her responsible for the $150,000 mortgage and refuse to release her finances until they drop the $150,000 claim.
