May 19, 2009
A Texas woman could spend almost two decades in federal prison alongside her sister who was sentenced to 99 years.
Karen Hayes, 58, admitted to and was sentenced for participating in a mortgage fraud scheme that cost taxpayers more than $3 million. Hayes pleaded guilty to engaging in organized criminal activity and falsifying statements to obtain property or credit. Officials said the scheme involved getting low-income home buyers, who weren't qualified, approved for government-backed mortgage loans.
Her sister, brother-in-law and niece were also indicted. Her sister, Kandace Marriott was recently sentenced to 99 years.
