Accused Claim It Was a Mistake

In a fraud case where seven have already pleaded guilty, two others on trial say that they made mistakes but never intended to defraud buyers.

Jonathan L. Boyd and James D. Gaither are on trial for what prosecutors said was a mortgage fraud scheme totaling more than $2.6 million in loans. Boyd, a loan officer at Summertime Mortgage, allegedly found the buyers and offered to manage some of the properties as rentals.Gaither, an Army veteran, was the appraiser.

Many of the homes involved have fallen to foreclosure. More than 200 people and 20 lenders were victims of the alleged scheme.
