One city is seeking to stamp out mortgage fraud by educating its residents about the latest scams.
A new campaign is underway in San Francisco to help at-risk homeowners and low-income families become aware of fake mortgage refinance schemes. The city District Attorney's office and assessor have created pamphlets they are distributing and giving lectures on the subject to community groups.
The brochure advises homeowners to consult only with their lenders, at no cost, and to avoid companies that promise to help them avoid foreclosure for a fee.
