May 12, 2009
A Florida lawyer said he made a huge mistake after his participation in a multimillion-dollar mortgage fraud scheme resulted in a five-year prison sentence for him. The judge said he got what he deserved.
John A. Yanchek, 49, was given a lighter sentence for his cooperation with prosecutors and testifying against a co-defendant, Larry P. Nardelli -- who was convicted for his part in the $82.7 million mortgage fraud scheme.
The pair, along with Michael A. Tringali and Neil Mohamed Husani, defrauded Orion Bank, Mercantile Bank, Bank Atlantic, Coast Bank, Fifth/Third Bank, Wachovia Bank and First State Bank. Tringali was sentenced to three years and four months in prison. Yanchek must also serve five years probation and forfeit $7.6 million in assets.
