Lawyer Guilty on 18 Counts

A Brooklyn lawyer was found guilty on 18 counts relating to a multimillion-dollar mortgage fraud scheme after a two-week jury trial.
Alexander Kaplan along with others were accused of using straw buyers and false information, including inflated appraisals, to obtain hundreds of mortgage and home equity loans from various lenders. Kaplan was charged with being the closing attorney and providing misleading and false information to the lenders.
The scheme resulted in about $13 million in fraudulent loans. Kaplan faces up to 30 years in prisona dna fine of $1 million or twice the gross loss resulting from the offense. Sentencing is set for May 1.
