Celebrity support didn't help a real estate agent escape conviction. After a six-week trial, a Minneapolis man was convicted on charges of mortgage fraud for the second time. His five-year probation from the first conviction had just ended when he allegedly began to run another scheme.
Larry Maxwell, 54, was found guilty on all 18 counts against him in a $2 million mortgage fraud scheme that used forgery, identity theft and bogus loan applications. Prosecutors allege Maxwell made commissions as a real estate agent, as well as, profiting from fees and kickbacks in the loan deals. His company, Realty Executive Advantage Plus Group has fraud related charges pending also.
Former Minnesota Vikings punter Greg Coleman, sportswriter Larry Fitzgerald and others testified for Maxwell at his hearing.
Maxwell's attorney, Larry Reed, said his client's role was to bring sellers and buyers together, and that he was tricked by others who ran the scheme. After clashing with the judge, Reed was found in contempt of court.
